Slow Living for Beginners

Caity Rose

From the outside slow living may look a little bit strange. It’s often associated with gardening, baking all the time and generally an idealistic life that not many can strive for.

But what if I told you slow living was so much more? That you could do it no matter where you live or even if you work a 9 to 5 job? Slow living doesn’t have to be rural, stay-at-home living. You can use these tips to start slowing down and start enjoying life, embracing lazy days, and making space for what makes you happy.

Slow living is an approach to life that cuts the fluff and takes you back to your roots, even if those roots are in the city. life is too short to be busy every second, to be filling up every second of your schedule and to be overwhelmed with the number of things going on.

So often we get stuck in the hustle of life and forget to take care of ourselves along the way. This guide will help you to slow down and really start living the life you want.

Slow living for beginners:

1. Start making routines for yourself

Routines help bring balance and allow us to prioritize things we want to do in our lives. Whether that’s a skincare regime in the morning, some extra time to journal or just time to enjoy your coffee. Building structure and sticking to it can help life seem to slow down as we’re not rushing or filling the space with extra stuff.

2. Set time aside for something you WANT to do

While routines are important and help us to slow down, it’s also important to set time aside for something fun that you like to do. Be it reading a book, getting a workout in, taking a walk or crafting. Whatever suits your fancy! It helps us be present and enjoy life. Setting this time aside for yourself also means saying no to other things in order to maintain time for these things.

3. Take time away from your phone

Nothing makes me feel more anxious or “fast-paced” than the ever-changing news cycle. Taking time away from social media and your phone can help you slow down and I’ve in your own little world. Which is truly such a beautiful thing.

4. Live seasonally

Too often we spend our time waiting for the next season rather than embracing the one that we’re in. How many winters do we spend longing for spring? How many summers do we long for autumn? We’re always chasing the next season. And what a shame that we never truly appreciate each season for what it has to offer. Living seasonally helps us live in the moment. We can do this by participating in seasonal activities like sledding in the winter, corn mazes in autumn or camping in summer. You can also start eating what’s in season to be really and truly present with the seasons.
