Sustainability on a budget

Caity Rose

Sustainability looks different for everyone. Sometimes it looks like getting every plastic-free alternative possible. Sometimes it looks like growing all your food from scratch. And sometimes it looks like paperless bills and reusing plastic yogurt tubs.

The best part is you get to decide how sustainability will work for you and how expensive it will be.

Sustainability on a budget

1. Switch to paperless bills

Not only is this completely free but also takes little time and will save a ton of waste. The majority of billing is done online nowadays anyway so if you have any paper bills still coming in the bill, make the switch ASAP!

2. Make your own cleaning products

Cleaning products at the store can be super expensive, not to mention packaged in single-use plastic and full of chemicals that aren’t great to breathe in. You can make your own products that are just as effective with a lot of ingredients you already have at home.

See out master list of recipes here.

3. Do a trash audit and make swaps accordingly

This will take more brain power than anything. But try to be mindful of what you’re most often throwing in the trash. Is it plastic ziploc bags? Is it Q-tips in the bathroom? When you become aware then you make the appropriate zero-waste swap which will not only save waste but save money in the long run.

4. Shop second hand

Thrifting is having a bit of a moment at the moment. It’s shifted from something that was seen as “less than” to something that’s gaining in popularity. So if you’re not on board with the thrifting movement yet, now is the time! It’s a more affordable way to shop for anything you could need. From clothes to furniture to books to you name it!

5. Meal plan

Food waste not only costs us money but is actually harming our planet. It’s easy to think that throwing food in the bin means it will break down in a landfill but that’s a common misconception. Food that sits in a landfill doesn’t have enough air to break down properly and releases harmful methane gases that contribute to climate change.

Meal planning can ensure you’re buying exactly what you need and using them before they can go to waste!

These are just 5 simple ways you can practice sustainability on a budget! Leave a comment below and let me know how you like to practice sustainability on a budget!
