Which Reusable Period Product is Right for you?
Traditional period products tend to cause a lot of waste. They’re single-use with no good way to dispose of them and they’re often made with harmful materials, to both us and the planet.
Not to mention the cost of buying period products every single month. So whether you’re looking to save money or save the planet, switching to a reusable alternative is the right move. But how do you know which reusable period product is right for you? Here’s our full guide to choosing what’s right for you!

1. Period Underwear
I must put this one as number one on the list as it’s my favourite reusable period product! People tend to get a little bit weird when talking about period underwear and it’s a shame there’s such a stigma around it.
It’s one of the comfiest, most sustainable options out there. And it’s exactly as it sounds. It’s absorbent underwear that you can wash and reuse time and time again. No, it doesn’t feel like you’re sitting in your blood and no it’s not gross. Simply wear them until full (much like a traditional pad) and then toss them in the wash!
The best part is after investing in a few pairs to wear throughout your cycle you don’t have to spend monthly anymore!
Here are a few I’d recommend:
The Period Company – Prices range from $13 – $31 a pair
ModiBodi – Prices range from $25 – $37 a pair
Period Aisle – Prices range from $32 – $52 a pair

2. Reusable Pads
Reusable pads are much like a regular pad except reusable! They work in a similar way to period underwear where you wear them until full and then toss them in the wash.
I have personally found them to be less absorbent so I would say if you have a heavier flow, these might not be for you. I have also found them to slide around a bit as unlike traditional pads they do not have a sticky layer.
I like these for the day before or after my cycle to catch any excess or as a precaution. They’re easier to change in public and take with you on the go!
Here are a few I’d recommend:
Period Aisle – Prices range from $16 – $22 per pad
Glad Rags – Prices range from $15 – $24 per pad

3. Menstrual Cups
Menstrual Cups are a great option if you’re familiar with tampons or are looking for an easily transportable item. These little silicone cups come in a few sizes and work to catch and store your period blood when inserted. These are a great option for on the go!
Here are some of the best options:
Period Aisle – $40 per cup (you only need one!)
Diva cup – $31 per cup
Saalt – $43 per cup

4. Menstrual Disc
Menstrual discs are a natural path from a menstrual cup. They work similarly and are made from silicone as well. They also work to catch the blood when inserted however their shape is what makes a difference. Some claim that they fit better than a cup or are more comfortable. I’ve tried both and they’re very similar. It might come down to trying both and seeing what works best for you.
Some discs I’d recommend:
Diva – $31 per disc
Flex – $21 per disc

With any of these products, there will be trial and error. If we’re used to disposable products, it can be a learning curve to get used to taking care of and wearing reusable items. I’ve tried all and found that period under and menstrual discs are my favourite! I know plenty of women who prefer reusable pads or menstrual cups!
Finding which reusable period product is best for you will always be worth it!
