Zero Waste Essentials on Amazon

Caity Rose

When you think zero-waste or sustainable living, Amazon probably isn’t the first thing that pops into your mind. While they’ve taken some steps to be more sustainable, like using recyclable packing, they have a long way to go.

That being said, Amazon is accessible to most people. It reaches small towns and rural areas and has a lot of affordable options. Instead of boycotting, we can use what we have to live sustainably. These are my top zero-waste essentials on Amazon.

Bathroom essentials:

1. Bamboo toothbrush

We should be switching out our toothbrush every 3 months. This means we’re going through 4 toothbrushes a year and if they’re plastic, they end up in our landfills where they won’t decompose. Switching to a bamboo toothbrush is a great zero-waste option as the natural fibres in the bamboo will breakdown in only a few short years.

2. Toothpaste tabs or metal recyclable toothpaste tube

Toothpaste tabs are a great zero waste alternative! They’re toothpaste in solid form. Because regular toothpaste has so much liquid it costs more energy to produce and ship. With toothpaste tabs, you simply pop one in your mouth, chew a little and brush as normal! If that’s not quite your style you can find regular toothpaste in a recyclable metal tube! Once you’re through, cut open the tube, give it a good clean and toss it in your bin!

3. Bar soap

Bar soap is a classic zero waste swap. No need for single use plastic bottles taking up space in your shower!

4. Shampoo and conditioner bars

Shampoo and conditioner bars are like bar soap for your hair! This eliminates the excess water needed when creating and shipping the product and the plastic bottles in your shower.

5. Bidet

A bidet is not only amazing for your hygiene but can help reduce the amount of toilet paper you use!

6. Natural loofah or silicon loofah

The classic loofah is made from plastic and can harbour a lot of harmful bacterial including mould. A natural loofah is easy to use and will breakdown in a landfill when down. A silicon loofah is endlessly reusable and naturally anti-bacterial!

7. Safety razor

Plastic razors are a pain. You constantly need to replace them and they’ll stay on this earth longer than we will. A safety razor is metal and reusable for a lifetime if taken care of.

8. Plastic free deodorant

Deodorant is another useless plastic item. A plastic free deodorant stick gets the job done and will decompose when you’re done with it!

9. Reusable cotton swab

Say goodbye to buying cotton swabs multiple times a year and hello to your new reusable, silicon one!

10. Refillable floss

Ditch the floss sticks and plastic floss containers with this glass refillable, silk-free floss!

Kitchen Essentials:

1. Silicon food huggers

For fruits and veggies that are half eaten, use these silicon food huggers! This helps extend their life in the fridge by keeping air out and freshness in!

2. Reusable ziploc bags

Single use plastic baggies are a thing of the past. These reusable silicon bags are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe.

3. Beeswax wraps

Beeswax wraps are an ideal solution for plastic wrap. You can use it to cover bowls, and plates or just wrap up leftover foods.

4. Cloth napkins

Gone are the days of flimsy, single use napkins. These cloth napkins are of course reusable and easily washable!

5. Reusable straw

We all love to complain about paper straws, so come prepared with your own reusable straw instead!

6. Plastic free sponge

Sponges are what I like to call a hidden plastic. Not everyone knows they’re made from plastic that won’t break down. Switch to a plastic-free sponge instead!

7. Dish soap block

Solid is king. Like regular soap bars, a dish soap block is more concentrated (meaning you use less) and plastic-free! One block can last you a whole year of washing dishes regularly.

8. Reusable produce bags

There are few plastics worse than the flimsy, thin, produce bags at the grocery store. invest in these reusable ones and help reduce waste.

9. Reusable to-go mug

When getting coffee out, bring your reusable coffee mug to fill! Chic and zero-waste!

10. Reusable paper towels

For messes and spills, don’t reach for the paper towels made from trees but for these reusable paper towels instead!

Other:

1. Laundry detergent sheets

No more bulky, single use laundry detergent bottles! These laundry strips are plastic-free and weigh a fraction of the weight without the needless water.

2. Reusable cotton rounds

For removing makeup and skincare, opt for these reusable and washable cotton rounds. These ones are black to help reduce the appearance of stains.

3. Toilet bowl cleaner strips

Much like the laundry detergent strips, these toilet bowl cleaner strips are concentrated and get the job done!

4. Reusable dryer balls

Ditch single use dryer sheets for the reusable dry balls instead!

5. Plastic free lipbalm

Packaged in the same style of plastic free deodorant, this tube will decompose at the end of its life!
